Introduction
Marc by Marc Jacobs is a second line of the brand Marc Jacobs. The designer Marc Jacobs, a beaming star in the American design industry, is famous for his trendy and willing to try the newest. Throughout Jacobs’s collections, we can find a distinctive and changeful color matching style.
Brand Analysis
Giving a simple color analysis to the collections from Marc by Marc Jacobs in the starting from the 01’s F/W, It is no doubt that Jacobs likes to include a range of colors into the every season’s collections. In general, not less than 5 different colors can be found on each outfit.
Looking deeper into the theories, Jacobs match the colors on a trend of the following:
i. Analogous Color Scheme
Jacobs applies the analogous color scheme to his designs to maintain a fluidity of monochromatic matching, which usually using one dominant color with others secondary in importance. One of the important characteristics of Jacobs’s works by adopting the color scheme is to give life and energy to the outfits. Occasionally he mixed the analogous color scheme with the complementary color scheme to enhance the color effect.
ii.Complementary and Split Complementary Color Scheme
Secondly, by analyzing the season’s collections, we can easily find that the complementary colors used in the outfits are usually in red, yellow, blue and violet.
iii. Balance of Color
Lastly, Jacobs balance the collections by using dark value or dull intensities to avoid boredom and conflict.
Moreover, the color family in Marc by Marc Jacobs collections could be repeatable. The some color families are cycled every four to five years. For instance, the color family of 07 S/S is very close to those in 02’s S/S. Similar phenomenon can be observed between 08 S/S and 03 S/S, too. Also, it seems to be Jacobs’s style to continue the current color into the next coming seasons, one of the obvious examples is after 02 F/W, some of the were colors merely changed between all seasons.
Marc by Marc Jacobs collections usually can be divided into two parts, with respect to the different combination of value and chrome of colors used. For example, in the 09 S/S, 07 S/S and 07 S/S collections, half of the collections intentionally in lower intensity, receding hues and fewer colors; while in the other half more colors were used per outfits
Jacobs’s creative color combination ideas give a psychophysical effect of youth action and energetic, which can be carried out in the decoration of Marc by Marc Jacobs shops: lightness shop backgrounds give customers a comfortable harmonic feeling; the design of shop logo also applied the achromatic color scheme.
Design Frame
After the research, a theme Dawn and Sunrise is developed for the collection of Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall Winter 2009. Sunrise brings light, which represents a fresh and new beginning. While at dawn is the darkest night. Lives of Teens are full of dramatic changes with laughter and tears, which just like they are walking through the shadow to the sunset. Marc by Marc Jacobs is a line for youngsters who are energetic, optimistic and dreaming. Therefore, the theme is suitable for the brand.
Process and Details
In the process of choosing suitable colors for my design, some color matching used in Marc by Marc Jacobs are good references to elaborate an energetic feeling. Therefore, the colors family of mine design include: bright and dull intensity blue, violet, green, yellow-orange, yellow, brown, bright and dull intensity of red and other auxiliary colors of black and white and etc.
After plot out the color family, more than 30 sets of outfits are painted in different color combination so as to try out the best color matching collection. Then, the best six outfits are selected carefully for the final collection.
Looking through the collection, you can see the temperature of the outfits is change from cool to warm. Demonstrating Marc by Marc Jacobs color theories and design style, my collection is also divided into two parts. The main color of the first part and the second part is receding colors and aggressive colors respectively. Moreover, there are about 5 to 7 hues per outfit.
For the first outfit, blue hue is used as the main color and the scheme of analogous color is applied. The blue hue dress is change the value from shades to tins gradually. Then, 20% grey coat is used to match the blue hue. For making the feeling of quiet, the scheme of balance of color is used that brown, which as same intensity as dark blue, is put on the shoes to make the whole more harmony.
For the second outfit, double complimentary color scheme of yellow and violet, orange and blue are applied. Besides, the yellow and orange, blue and violet are analogous colors with same brightness respectively.
The third outfit is base on the complementary color scheme that the dull blue green matches the brown color. This balance of colors is used to emphasis the advancing qualities of red orange collar of the coat.
The fourth outfit is base on the split complementary color scheme that orange, red and blue is applied as main color. This dull intensity blue, red and black color emphasis the focus point on the outfit, by using a bright orange on the top and high chroma blue on the bottom.
For the fifth outfit, agreement of harmony feeling is delivered when analogous colors are applied. For avoiding boring, the colors are advancing or receding different qualities of values and intensities to give a contrast feeling.
The last outfit is use double complementary color scheme of blue-violet and yellow- orange, blue-green and red-orange. Moreover, the contrast of the tins and shades is large and the warm colors are the main character of this outfit.
Conclusion
All in all, harmony is the major aims of my collection and the color theories applied included Analogous color scheme, Complementary color scheme, Split complementary scheme, Double complementary color scheme, Balance of color family, Contrast of color family and Harmony of color family. By the experience of doing many color matching exercises, forecasting the color trend of 2009 Fall Winter and the Color theories of Marc by Marc Jacobs, I do believe this six outfits are under excellent color combinations and suitable for the season of 2009 Fall Winter.
